Renting a car seems the best way for us to explore at least the larger islands. There are buses, but with a car we often make ad-hoc decisions and change a day's plan.
The eastern shore (Atlantic side) is inundated by Sargassum seaweed, a state of emergency for the communities, trying to rid themselves from the rotting, stinking mess.
The seaside villages are more fishing villages with some low key tourism, which gives it a low key charm.
Crossing the island to the Caribbean side, we drove thru some rain forest, into the clouds, where the Volcano Mount Pelée is hiding.
Back down the hills, we had lunch (Fresh baguette, assorted cheeses) on one of the volcanic-ash sand beaches.
Saint Pierre was our next stop, the city was destroyed in 1902 by Mount Pelée with 30000 souls lost. It never came back to former glory, but is a cute town with lots of old and new to explore.
Before rush hour around Fort-De-France, we headed back to the boat across the mountains.
A visit to Fort De France is planned for tomorrow, with a higher chance of rain in the forecast. We thought to cover as much as possible on day one while the weather still holds.
