Across the gulf stream

We left Morehead City at 8:00 am. 4 more boats left in the same direction: "Persephone" and "La Flaneuse" had started earlier in the morning. "Equinox" and "Elysium" were with us in the second group. A loosely coupled group, staying in radio contact with each other.

Sunday morning started out with low hanging clouds and a bit of wind to make it to Cape Lookout. Dolphins gave us an escort out of the inlet. Rounding the cape, swells from the ocean broke over the shallows causing very confused seas in light winds. We gave up on the slapping sails and motored for 2h until we reached deeper water and more regular seas. Closer to the gulf stream the seas started building, but this was just a nice swell sometimes 8-10 ft high but far apart. We never had blue sky, except for sunset, the sun peaked out under the clouds. It is around new moon, the night was dark, a few times we could see stars between the clouds. We had nice bio-luminescence, like sparkling stars in our bow wake, all night. It never got cold at night, the warmer waters of the gulf stream helped. We are beam reaching in N winds, the winds will shift to the NE, then E, which will bring us on a more southerly course. This mornings weather forecast had some significant changes, surprise! Instead of beam reaching all the way to the islands we will end up in a TROFF with very little wind. We probably have to motor for a couple of days then, starting around Thursday.
