Beqa II

A bit south of Rukua village is the "Lawaki Beach house". Much simpler than the resort to the north, it offers lunches for day-trip tours, shuttled by boat from Viti Levu (as quick as 40 min from the Pacific Harbour Resort). They also have a few huts to be rented out, often used by NGOs, or research teams that are looking for longer stays than a few days. They also have a mooring for sailboats, so we don't have to anchor, with the chance of damaging some coral with anchor or chain. When we arrived a small day-trip boat was on that mooring. There are smaller moorings in shallow water and we asked them to move their boat to them, which they did.

The owner couple is Fijian / Swiss and have made an effort to protect their house-reef from fishing. Almost every local boat driving around is dragging a lure here and the reefs often seem void of bigger fish. Here the villages to both sides of this property are getting part of the proceeds to hold off from fishing in this area.

Accomodations

The main house

The owners weren't in, but we had communicated (whatsapp) with them, were welcomed, and the staff (Sereima and Senikau) knew we would be coming in. With a bit of notice, we also got a nice lunch (Kokoda, raw fish cured in coconut milk).

After we had eaten, Sereima sat down with us and we had a nice long chat. She has sworn off smart phones, has a little old style button phone, and she rather reads books. Her English was so fluent, we though she would have perfected that while living abroad. To the contrary, she stayed in Fiji all her life.

Over the next couple days we enjoyed good weather, warm and calm water to actually do some snorkeling.

A hand drawn map to give us some idea

The water was a bit siltier than we had hoped.

Sightings of parrot fish made us happy
