Tahanea NW Pass Drift Snorkel

We only spent two nights anchored by the passes into the atoll, to do one more drift snorkel on the NW pass. Catamaran Waveriders joined us in style on their water-bicycles.

We always try to time our drift snorkel to the beginning of incoming tide, take the dinghy to the outside of the atoll and then drift in with a slow current. This time we were a tad late and the current was already too strong to be able to hover over a place, especially having the dinghy in tow.  Close to the edge the current was less and we got to see lots of fish. It was one of the better snorkel we had in years. This must be somewhat seasonal, the last time we were here it wasn't all that great. This time we had a lot of larger parrot fish, typically non-afraid, eating away at the coral and producing sand. Plus we saw a bunch of groupers too.

Every so often a black tip, white tip or grey reef shark came by, one even bumped Miss Waveriders, who then got out of the water quickly.

These days are pretty windless and hot, and we often have another soak before sunset.
