Back to the Baja side

From the boatyard we motored back 20nm to San Carlos and spent a last couple days between some provisioning and eating out. Sunday was forecast to have good wind after a lull during Saturday night. The lull came late, so when we left before sunrise, there was still residual swell with too little wind and we rocked and rolled for the first few hours. motoring.

Soon the wind picked up and we were reaching at hull speed, with a reef in each sail, to the other side. The sea state was a bit rougher than expected, and since we would be at anchor before nightfall, we forgot about eating for the 12 hours crossing.

After 2/3rds of the way, we came by a pod of pilot whales. From the far we could see a few jumps, a few splashes with the fluke, and a few small spouts. But when coming closer, they behaved eerily quiet, and didn't even move out of the way. They just bobbed up and down in the water and waited for us to pass by.
