Basse Terre, Guadeloupe, part 1

An easy sail brought us from the Iles Des Saintes to Point-A-Pitre on Guadeloupe. This is the commercial center, with a commercial harbor, big ocean going container ships go in and out. It has a large "Bas Du Fort" marina, to which we anchored closely, by the shipyard. There they use dry-docks to haul yachts, not travel lifts. We are going to change out our forward head (=toilet), as we did with the aft head last October. In the BVI we scored the same toilet we installed in the back, for 1/2 the price, new in box. Now we will have to carry only one set of spare parts since both toilets will be the same. As with any boat project, there are usually some surprises and needs for parts, we had postponed the installation to a location where we can get any plumbing fittings needed, and Pointe-A-Pitre has it all.

Dry Docks

Shopping is good, with all the French goodies we missed for so long, like baguettes, cured meats, pates, cheeses and affordable wine.

After a couple of days just relaxing, we rented a car for three days and drove all over the mountainous left half of Guadeloupe.

black = roads, red = hiking trails

The first two days of car rental we only did short walks into the rain forest, it rained a lot, and flip-flops weren't the right attire to go much further...

We inhaled sights of beaches, villages, lush vegetation, sun and rain.
