Anse Marcel, St Martin

Deja Vu: We were here in March 2001 to learn Scuba diving. When not in class, we took the rental car all over the island, circled the island many times. We remember walking the docks of marinas and looking at cruising boats. We wanted to come back here, in our own boat. This place is good for snorkeling or diving but with the persistent strong swell, the water is all murky, one can't see anything.

Swell: All the North Caribbean islands are effected by large swell, Atlantic storms further North are pushing waves up to 15 ft towards us. We have some North protection with Anguilla to the North, but large swells still make it around and in the anchorages. We make the best of it, went surfing the swells with the dinghy.  The anchorages are difficult,  We listen to the Megayacht captains talking to each other, trying to find a place with less swell and enough activity to satisfy the owner / guests. In some places they can't even launch the tender, the big yachts roll quite badly. For a passionate swell report, read up on Elysium.
