A hell of a ride

As planned, we started motor-sailing at 13:00 towards the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Right up to this bridge we had current against us. We reached the bridge at 15:00, and that was supposed to be the turn of the current. Guess what, it did and gave us an extra knot towards Manhattan. In the East River it became more and more interesting. Besides sharing the roads with tugs, high speed ferries and tour boats, the current picked up speed and created lots of eddies, trying to spin the boat around. Not one dull moment, the skyline of Manhattan past fast. For some pics of the skyline, go to the photoalbum (<<== click here!))

We actually kept it slow, boat speed was about 5.5. Best ground speed through Hell Gate: 11.5 knots. Don't try this against the current.

We reached Manhasset Bay, Long Island at 19:00 and picked up one of the free mooring balls.
