Mast is up, down the Hudson River

9/17/2008 Leave Waterford at 7:20 AM in the morning mist and head for Castleton, which we reach at 9:45 AM. After registering we look at the mast and plan of attack (do it yourself crane). We slide the mast forward to clear arch and boom gallows and take the lines of the front support, when one idiot power boater blasts by the marina and in his wake the former support is waking with the mast back. Disaster can be avoided but that was one tense moment. The rest of stepping the mast went smoothly.

We had help from other sailors at the critical moment to get the mast through the deck. Then came the assembly of the parts (like: attach the shrouds, jib and backstay, untwist the main  and get it up, up the mast with antennas and wind instruments, mount boom) Then we needed a break and had a couple of drinks at the bar of the club. Very friendly people there. We were told about the Italian restaurant up hill and Jim at the club offered to drive us there. We had a delicious meal and left with three boxes of left overs. Couple more drinks and we fell into bed.

9/18/2008 finished conversion from powerboat to sailboat: Sails, Rig-tuning, Clean-up and boat wash, laundry, showers, etc. The wind is blowing like hell today and we thank our luck yesterday with no wind and only few waves while stepping the mast. We take it a bit easy today and have the leftovers from yesterday for dinner, after that some drinks at the club bar, to which we are mostly invited by the club members - one friendly bunch of people (powerboaters)!

9/19/2008 delayed start to 8 AM (fog and almost freezing), still made it down the Hudson River to West Point just after sunset. Hurrah, we are still on schedule ! Found a couple of sailboats anchored just south of West Point, opposite of Garrison and joined them just at sunset. Quickly prepared dinner (pork loin with couscous and the few veggies in the fridge that were still usable). After dinner update diary and blog while Dirk plays on his computer with all sorts of alarms and sounds (anchor, depth and who knows whats).
